What kinds of methods are used to measure wind speed and direction?

Wind speed is the distance the wind flows in a given time; wind force is the amount of force the wind has when it blows on an object. Wind speed is not graded, wind power is graded, and wind power is generally graded according to wind speed. Generally speaking, the smaller the wind speed and the lower the wind level, the weaker the wind's destructive power; conversely, the larger the wind speed and the higher the wind level, the stronger the wind's destructive power.

1. Why do we need to measure wind speed and direction?

Wind speed and direction is an important index analyzed by the Met Office and a key factor they pay attention to. It not only has a great impact on people's daily life, but also has an important significance to the Meteorological Office's research, sea voyage and other work,. Therefore, early measurement of wind speed and direction can help the smooth running of various social activities.

2. What are the ways to measure wind speed and direction?

According to the principle of measurement, we will explain the following ways: traditional measurement, mechanical measurement, ultrasonic measurement and so on.

Traditional Measurement Methods

1. Wind Direction Measurement: Use of Wind Vane

The wind direction arrow of a wind vane points to which direction the wind is blowing. When the vane makes an angle with the airflow path, the airflow will cause a pressure on the vane's tail. Its size is proportional to the projection of the wind vane's geometric shape on the vertical plane of the airflow direction. The head of the wind vane has a small windward area and the tail has a large windward area. The wind pressure caused by this pressure difference causes the vane to rotate around the vertical axis until the vane is parallel to the airflow. The direction of the wind can be easily observed from the relative position between the vane and the fixed main bearing indicator pole.

2. Wind Speed Measurement: Using Anemometer

Melting anemometer measurement range up to: 0.3 ~ 45m / S, but also can detect the wind temperature, wind volume, wind level, wind direction angle, minimum maximum average wind speed measurement, minimum maximum average wind volume measurement, but also support 960 data storage. The anemometer is externally connected to a retractable six-wheeled wind blade design, which makes the sensing more sensitive and accurate.

Mechanical Measurement

Mechanical sidetrack wind such as wind gauge wind measurement looks like a mechanical watch in appearance. It is commonly used as a wind measurement in shafts. Firstly, the wind speed needs to be estimated, then the wind vane and stopwatch are used to zero the anemometer hand and stopwatch, and then the anemometer is made to face the wind flow and be perpendicular to the direction of the wind flow. After the wind meter has been idle for 30 seconds, turn on the anemometer and stopwatch switches at the same time and start the measurement.

It should be noted that the number of wind measurements on the same section should not be less than three, and the wind measurement process should be carried out smoothly. For example, wind speed and direction sensors use common mechanical wind measurement methods to make better use of wind power generation and support the development of new energy wind power generation technology.

Ultrasonic Velocimetry

The principle of ultrasonic wind measurement is to achieve the measurement of wind speed and direction through the ultrasonic time difference method. Due to the rate of propagation of sound in the gas, it will be superimposed on the velocity of the airflow in the direction of the wind. If the propagation path of the ultrasonic wave is the same as the wind direction, its speed will be accelerated; on the contrary, if the propagation path of the ultrasonic wave is opposite to the wind direction, its speed will be slowed down. Thus, the rate of ultrasonic wave propagation through the air corresponds to a function of the wind speed under fixed measurement conditions. The wind direction and speed can be calculated.
