An Expert Guide to Bankart Lesions
Posted on 28 July, 2023 by siiorasurgicals
A Bankart lesion is a tear in the labrum, a ring of cartilage that surrounds the shoulder socket. It is a common injury that occurs when the shoulder dislocates or pops out of place. The labrum helps to stabilize the shoulder joint, and a tear can make the shoulder more likely to dislocate again. In severe shoulder dislocation cases, surgery involving shoulder orthopaedic implants may be required.
What Are the Symptoms of Bankart Lesions?
Here are some of the common symptoms that may be reported when Bankart lesions occur:
-
Pain in the front of the shoulder
-
Swelling and bruising around the shoulder
-
Weakness in the shoulder
-
Difficulty raising the arm overhead
-
Clicking or popping in the shoulder
-
Recurrent shoulder dislocations
What is the Diagnosis for Bankart Lesions?
Diagnosis of a Bankart lesion is typically made through a physical examination and imaging tests, such as an X-ray or MRI. An X-ray can sometimes show a bony Bankart lesion, which is a fracture of the glenoid rim that is associated with a Bankart tear. An MRI can provide more detailed images of the labrum and surrounding structures.
How are Bankart Lesions Treated?
Treatment for a Bankart lesion depends on the severity of the injury. In some cases, conservative treatment, such as rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), may be enough to relieve pain and swelling. Physical therapy may also be helpful to improve strength and range of motion.
If conservative treatment is not successful, surgery may be necessary to repair the labrum. There are two main types of surgery for Bankart lesions: open surgery and arthroscopic surgery. Open surgery involves making a large incision in the shoulder to access the labrum. Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that uses small incisions and a camera to view the inside of the shoulder.
The goal of surgery is to reattach the labrum to the glenoid rim. This can be done using sutures, anchors, or screws. After surgery, the shoulder will be immobilized for a period of time. Physical therapy will then be started to help restore range of motion and strength.
Most people with Bankart lesions make a full recovery. However, some people may experience recurrent shoulder instability, even after surgery. If this occurs, additional surgery or other treatment options may be necessary.
What Are the Tips for Preventing Bankart Lesions?
-
Warm up before exercising
-
Use proper technique when lifting weights or playing sports
-
Avoid activities that put your shoulder at risk for injury
-
Strengthen your shoulder muscles
-
Stretch your shoulder muscles regularly
If you experience pain or instability in your shoulder, see a doctor right away. Early diagnosis and treatment can help to prevent further damage to the shoulder and improve your chances of a full recovery.
