What is Bunion and How to Get Relief

Posted on 17 March, 2023 by Jones Roy

A bunion can be painful for some people and continues without reducing for months. Known as a bunion in big toe, in medical terms, it originates when the bone or tissue at the joint at the bottom of the big toe moves out of place.

One primary cause is years of abnormal movement and pressure on the joint. It forces the big toe to bend toward the others, which causes an often-painful bunion on the joint. Most of your body weight falls on the joint at the base of the big toe when you walk, resulting in severe and constant pain. This joint stiffens and becomes sore, and you may have trouble wearing shoes.

Bunions can also develop if you wear tight-fitting or narrow inflexible shoes. The shoes you wear must be the same as your feet shape, with a wide toe box and sufficient space between the tip of your toe and the shoe end.

Signs of Bunion

A bony bump protruding at your foot where the bottom of your big toe joins your foot is a symptom of a bunion. Other symptoms of a bunion include:

  • Inflammation, redness or soreness

  • Tenderness on touching it

  • Constant pain

  • Limited movement of the joint or toe

  • Corns or calluses

Podiatrists focus mainly on ensuring bunion pain relief as the illness does not go away permanently. The pain relief treatment includes

1] Pads and taping: If the bunion is not too intense, you can get bunion pads over the counter. These pads give cushioning to the infected area and reduce pain. You also get a medical tape to keep the foot in position.

2] Shoe inserts: Over-the-counter or custom-made shoe inserts (orthotics) can help control pronation, a foot placement issue that causes bunion formation. You can also put a spacer between the big toe and the second digit. Some people may find comfort in sporting a splint at night to support and keep the big toe straight.

3] Physical therapy: Physical therapy, ultrasound therapy, or physical massage can deplete the soft-tissue sticking and reduce discomfort and irritation. Several exercises can help improve muscle strength around the bunion.
