One of the most important seasonings in Middle Eastern cooking, Za’atar is loved for its earthy, savoury and tangy flavour combination.
Also known as zahtar, zatar or zaatar, za’atar is both a spice blend and a culinary herb. The za’atar herb or Hyssop belongs to the Marjoram/Oregano family. In addition to having flavour traits similar to Oregano, Za’atar also possesses a slight minty undertone. Many brands replace Zaatar herb with Thyme and add salt. Our salt free Za’atar blend is based on a traditional recipe and has a natural savoury flavour. Zaatar Buy
Spice Zen's Za’atar blend combines premium quality, organic dried herbs, whole spices and sesame seeds, hand-toasted to activate them and bring their flavours to the fore. Dried, organic Za’atar leaf, along with Sumac, Cumin, Sesame and Black Pepper bestow Spice Zen’s Za’atar blend with an authentically warm, nutty, toasty and herbaceous flavour.
This blend can be sprinkled on just about anything – meat, veggies, fish, dips, salads, bread and pita. You can use it as a rub for chicken, beef, lamb or fish, eggplant, vegetables or tofu. Dust it over hummus, yoghurt or baba ganoush, or use it to season poached eggs. Australian Herbs and Spices
One simple, satisfying way to use Za’atar is Za’atar Pita – drizzle olive oil over pita pieces, sprinkle with a pinch of Spice Zen's Za’atar blend, then place the pita pieces in a hot oven for a few minutes. Serve with creamy tahini, hommus or baba ganoush for a delicious appetiser.
